Symptoms of Gum Disease

Cosmetic veneers are wafer thin sheets of dental porcelain laminates or porcelain that are custom made to fit the fronts of your teeth. The tooth colored material mimics that light and reflects just like a natural tooth. The thin sheets of laminate are permanently bonded to the fronts of your teeth and can change the length, size, shape, and color.

Unlike dental resin materials used for cosmetic dentistry porcelain is better at resisting stains and contains almost the same light reflecting properties as your natural teeth.

What Dental Veneers Can Fix

According to Dr. Lindy Beverly from Orange Coast Cosmetic Dentistry, porcelain veneers are recommended to fix:

  • Discolored Teeth
  • Broken Teeth
  • Chipped Teeth
  • Worn Down Teeth
  • Misaligned Teeth
  • Uneven Teeth
  • Irregularly Shaped Teeth
  • To Close Spaces Between Teeth
The Procedure

You can expect three dental appointments for the porcelain veneer procedure. The first will be for your initial consultation, the second for preparation and the third for fitting. Depending on your treatment plan, you will have one or more teeth veneered.

During your initial consultation, you and Dr. Beverly will discuss your wants and needs and what you can expect from porcelain veneers. Your teeth will be thoroughly examined to ensure that you and porcelain veneers are a good fit. Pictures and x-rays may also be taken to determine your candidacy for porcelain veneers.

Preparation

During your second appointment, your Orange County Cosmetic Dentist will prepare each tooth for your new veneers. Dr. Beverly will remove a portion of your enamel to make way for the veneer. You may or may not require a local anesthetic. Because a portion of each tooth needs to be removed, porcelain veneers are permanent.

Your dental impressions will be sent to a dental lab, which takes about two weeks. If your teeth are unsightly, Dr. Beverly may recommend temporary veneers.

Bonding

During your final appointment, your veneers will be permanently bonded or cemented to your teeth. Before they are cemented, Dr. Beverly will place temporarily to check for color and fit. The veneers may also need to be trimmed and adjusted before a cement shade is chosen to bond your new porcelain veneers.

After choosing a color, Dr. Beverly will prepare each tooth for the veneer by cleaning, polishing, and etching. This roughens up your tooth or teeth allowing for a strong and permanent bond. Once the cement is applied, the veneers will be put into place. If Dr. Beverly is happy with the results, she will use a laser or light to cure or harden the cement.

During the final step, any excess dental cement will be removed before evaluating your bite for comfort and the fit. Dr. Beverly may ask you to return for another appointment to check your gums and teeth for veneer placement.
